Barcelona Guide – The secret behind the city

Barcelona GuideBarcelona is one of the most popular visited cities not only in Spain but all Europe. With thousands upon thousands of Brits packing their bags and booking a cheap flight to enjoy this magical city.

With something to offer everyone from the Gothic quarter where you can walk around and soak up the history of this very cool area of the city, to the architecture of Gaudi.

Wine and dine like the Catalonians do

Forget Mc Donalds, forget Michelin Star restaurants if you really want to experience authentic Catalan food, all you need to do is get off the beaten path and follow the locals.

The smallest bars and bistros nearly always offer some of the best tapas you will find, lots of fresh seafood, hams, patatas bravas (always) but it’s the seafood that will win your heart. As for the beer and wine, keep it local it’s always delicious and much cheaper than your well-known brands.

Top tip: Calamari (wowwwww! This never gets old)

Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone I promise you’re in for an adventure.

Where to stay in Barcelona?

The last time I visited we stayed at a brilliant boutique hotel called 187, which overlooked the Sagrada Familia – now a night time top floor view of this iconic attraction is out of this world. I can highly recommend this uber chic hotel if you get the chance and it is very reasonable priced and rooms are well equipped and offer everything you need.

There are also some fantastic 5* hotels in the Gothic quarter, one has a piano bar and serves some of the best cocktails you’ll ever have.

When to visit

If you’re looking for exceptional value for your Barcelona city break then stay well clear of British summer holidays and go either just before or just after. Christmas time it is pretty much dead and you can get some fantastic bargains, as did we on our last visit.

Points of interest & amusement

During Christmas the locals do not seem to decorate until Christmas eve and then everything including thousands of wall traversing Santa’s are spotted breaking and entering in to every hotel, b&b and apartment window. Quite funny.

Visit once and remember it forever – Barcelona is a top city.
